Making the purest essential oils can be expensive because it might require hundreds or even thousands of pounds of plant material to yield one pound of pure essential oil. For example, melissa oil sells for between $9,000 and $15,000 a pound. This might sound expensive, but you would need to understand that it takes 6000 pounds of plant material to product that single pound of essential oil.
Most of the oils that are produced today are used by the perfume industry. They are purchased for their aromatic qualities only. The oils are produced in completely the wrong way for any health benefits to remain. High pressure and temperature along with chemical solvents are often used during the distillation process to extract a greater quantity of oil at a faster pace. These oils can smell very good and cost much less, but they will lack the most important if not all of the chemical constituents necessary to produce a Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oil.
Essential oils are highly concentrated liquids that have been distilled from plants. The oils can come from many different parts of the plant, including seeds, bark, leaves, stems, roots, flowers, and fruit. One of the most important factors when considering essential oils is their purity and therapeutic value. This is determined by the oils chemical components or constituents. The constituents of an essential oil can be affected by a number of variables including the part of the plant from which the oil was taken, fertilizer used, soil condition, climate, altitude, geographical location, harvest season, harvest method and distillation process.
Plants can produce several types of chemotypes (simple species or biochemical specifics) depending on the method and conditions of growth, region, and climate. Thyme for instance can have high levels of thymol depending on the time of year in which it is distilled. If distilled during mid-summer or late fall, there can be higher levels off carvacrol, causing the oil to be more caustic or irritating to the skin. Low temperature and low pressure distillation is also an important factor to maintaining the purity and fragrance of a therapeutic value of oil.
As we use and begin to understand the benefits and power of essential oils in our personal healthcare, we begin to comprehend the absolute necessity for procuring certified pure therapeutic grade (CPTG) essential oils. There can be no substitute for the purest essential oils we can find. Scientist and chemists have been able to reproduce in labs some of the constituents in essential oils but have yet to recreate an essential oil completely.
All information on this website is based on the use of certified pure therapeutic grade (CPTG) essential oils. Those of you who are new in the discovery of essential oils, or even those who are versed in the use and terminology of essential oils and aromatherapy must actively seek out the highest therapeutic grade and purest quality essential oils available. Anything less then certified pure therapeutic grade (CPTG) essential oils may not produce the desired effects and results and in some cases can be extremely toxic.

doTERRA Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils represent the safest purest and most beneficial essential oils available today. They are gently and skillfully distilled from plants that have been patiently harvested at the perfect moment by experienced growers from around the world for ideal extract composition and efficacy.
And Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils means something very different. It means we’ve protected the chemical compounding of that plant just as it was produced from the earth. We don’t need to improve on those compounds. And if we have the care, if we have the scientific knowledge, if we have the commitment and the integrity to preserve that.
Therapeutic Grade essential oils are most often extracted via a low heat steam distiallation process in which steam is circulated under pressure through plant material liberating the essential oils into the steam. As the steam mixture cools, the water and oils naturally separate and the oil is collected in its pure form. To ensure the highest quality oil extract of correct chemical composition, temperature and pressure must be monitored very closely. To little heat and pressure will not release valuable oil. While too much can change an extracts composition and potency. As important as the carefully controlled extraction process is, it is also vital to ensure the perfection of the resulting essential oil.
There are a growing number of products claiming to be or to contain essential oils. They range in price and quality and are found in skin care, cosmetics, aromatherapy and other products. However, many of these products do not use 100% pure essential oils and often use fragrance synthetic chemical substitutes to dilute or replace more expensive essential oil extracts.
Synthetic oils cause side effects. Naturally occurring ones don’t, it really comes down to a trust issue. You really have to trust the sourcing of the essential oils. You have to be able to trust, you want to be able to trust where the oil has come from, that it’s been maintained in the proper, cause you’re not going to know. You’re not going to have any idea when you pull an essential oil off of the shelf whether or not it’s pure. There’s no way for you to tell. It’s why we make the commitments we do for testing and for chemical analysis, not once, every single time. It’s the only way to ensure that quality exists and when you do then you have something that’s magical, then you have something that creates change.
Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils are 100% pure natural aromatic compounds carefully extracted from plants. They do not contain fillers or artificial ingredients that would dilute their active qualities. Compare the smell of doTERRA’s 100% lavender essential oil to another lavender oil or product in your home. If your products fragrance is overbearing in any one note, it may contain synthetic chemical substitutes. A 100% pure therapeutic grade essential oil should have a balanced broad fragrance profile and should smell crystal clean.

doTERRA’s line of Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils represent the premium standard for essential oils today. Long valued for their uses. Essential oils have played a significant role throughout history in health and wellness.
When I think about CPTG, when I think about quality of essential oils. I think this is the question I get more than any other. What makes doTERRA oils different? What makes it unlike any other essential oil that you can have access to? And it’s our commitment to that quality standard. In my mind, it is a division of two different things. One is, we have to have safety. There needs to be purity associated with the essential oil. We don’t want to improve on what nature has already created for us. And so we maintain the purity, we maintain the delicate nature of all the compounds, however large or however small they are in their presence. They must be preserved. We don’t want to change them; we don’t want to alter them, because when we do, we alter the effects that they have within the body.
And efficacy is the second component associated with that. They must perform their designed function within the body.
Today, science is confirming the relevant and important roles of essential oils. Each of doTERRA’s essential oils contains unique, potent properties. Whether it is the sweet, warm citrusy fragrance of ginger, or the age old wisdom of frankincense. DoTERRA provides only the finest oils as well as other quality products, for those you demand perfection.
DoTERRA’s essential oils are 100% pure and natural and are free from synthetic compounds or contaminants. doTERRA for your home. doTERRA for your health.

What does it mean to be classified as Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade?
For an essential oil company to be classified as therapeutic grade, there is only 1 test to pass- the Gas Chromatograph (Gas) test.
What does the Gas Chromatograph test look for?
Each essential oil has hundreds of compounds. During the gas test ,specific compounds are checked for. As long as the specific compounds are present, the oil passes and can be classified as therapeutic grade. An important factor to note here is that there is no requirement for purity in this test. This test does not check for foreign impurities such as pesticides and weeds, nor does it check for all of the compounds to be present. If the specific compounds that the test was searching for are all created synthetically, the oil will still pass. Here’s the kicker- if an oil passes and is allowed to be classified as therapeutic grade, it can also be labeled as 100% pure, even if it’s contents are entirely synthetic or harmful.
We have to do better than that right? Then let’s talk about a second test that most high end essential oil companies perform.
The Mass Spectrometry(MS) Test
The MS test looks for key things that the gas chromatograph test did not look for. 1) It checks for foreign impurities of any kind. 2) Tests for exact amounts of compounds, all of them must be present in order to pass. If there is 1 out of hundreds of compounds missing it does not pass. 3) All compounds must be pure.
What are the problems with this test? There is no regulation on how often this test should be performed. Most companies don’t perform the MS test often, some go years between testing. Some companies perform this test in house, a cause for concern since this leaves room for a conflict of interest. Prices for oils are higher than those from companies who only perform the GAS test, and yet you may be getting the same quality of oil.
What is Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG)?
CPTG means that both the gas chromatograph and mass spectrometry test were performed, but beyond that it also guarantees that the MS test was performed for every oil! This standard means that you know your oil is 100% pure! The therapeutic properties will perform at their best and you can use these oils for therapy without worrying about harmful side effects. Because they are so pure and potent, very little is used for an application. Most applications require no more than 1-3 drops per use.
doTERRA’s CPTG essential oils can be used in conjunction with any current medication you are taking, and will not interfere with any health regime you might be following. In fact, CPTG oils by doTERRA will do a better job than the medication can and can only enhance a healthy lifestyle. A bold statement? Yes, medications help combat health issues, but at what cost. There is always a list of pretty nasty side effects that come with the use of any synthetic medication. Whether they be symptoms that show after a few uses or symptoms that will take years to surface, negative action inside the body has a negative impact on the body.
Influenza is a highly contagious infection caused by a virus. It is what we know as “the flu.” This also applies to different strains of “the flu” including the swine flu, or H1N1. Common symptoms of the flu include high fever, cough, sore throat, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, nausea and congestion.
There are numerous oils that can be beneficial in both preventing the onset of the flu and aid in fighting off the infection.
The most common are:
There are others to consider also, but these 6 essential oils above should be your first choice. The additional oils include:
Application of the oils:
Diffusing the oils into the air can give both the benefits of healing to those suffering from the flu and help prevent the spread of the virus, especially if the oil being used has anti-viral properties.
Dilute any of the oils as recommended and apply to the chest, back, thymus area, or sinuses.
Add 1-2 drops to a hot bath.
Replacing unsafe and harsh-smelling chemicals in your home by using essential oils is one of the many benefits of using essential oils!
Here are a few cleaning tips:
Dishwasher:
Add a few drops of essential oils to your dishwasher and clean more than just your dishes! Suggested oils for your dishwasher: lavender, melaleuca, lemon, or wild orange.
Laundry:
Add a few drops of essential oils to your laundry and enjoy a fresh smell as well as a very effective disinfectant! Eucalyptus kills dust mites (dust mites feed on our dead skin cells and leave 10x their body weight in fecal matter behind every day, and we are lucky enough to be allergic to their waste!) add 5 or more drops to each load of laundry. Add your favorite smelling essential oil to a dryer sheet and make the whole load smell fantastic!
Surface cleaners:
Use as plastic spray bottle filled with water and a few drops of any citrus essential oil or a defense blend to disinfect your kitchen and bathroom surfaces. You can also add a few drops of your hand dish soap to the mixture for a more soapy cleaner. Suggested oils: (for a medium to large spray bottle) 3 or more of any of the following – lavender, lemon, grapefruit, cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus, thyme, onguard, citrus bliss, or melaleuca. Be sure to shake the bottle at the beginning of and throughout cleaning since the oils will separate from the water.
Floors and carpets:
*For non-carpeted floors, add a 1/4 cup of white vinegar to a bucket of water. Add 5 drops of lemon or melaleuca. For a really dirty floor add several drops of dish soap to the mixture- this will clean even the dirtiest floors!
*Carpet freshener- 10 or more drops of essential oil in a cup of baking soda or borax powder. Seal in a container over night to allow the oils to absorb into the powder. Sprinkle over carpet and vacuum up. Or, in a water based filter system like in a Rainbow vacuum, just add essential oils to the water basin! In a system with a bag or canister, add essential oils to a rag and place in the bag or canister.
Deodorize Kitchens and Bathrooms:
Add any of the following oils to a spray bottle (shake throughout use): a few drops of each, rosemary, lemon, eucalyptus, and lavender or the blend Purify.
General cleaning and disinfecting:
Add any or all of the following oils to cleaning water: orange, lemon, or peppermint.
Good luck and happy cleaning:)
Kidney stones are no fun. I personally have not had any but have had friends, family and neighbors who have and the experience they tell is always the same…..painful. Kidney stones are made from salts and minerals that stick together in and form small “stones” or pebbles. The most common ways of removing kidney stones is to “pass them” or urinate them out, this is usually a big part of the painful process.
Essential oils can be used to help rid your kidney stone faster or even dissolve it. Below are a few essential oils that can be helpful when dealing with kidney stones.
These are suggestions, everyone is a little different when it comes to essential oils and their health. Try these out and let us know.
