This might sound expensive, but you would need to understand that it takes 6000 pounds of plant material to product that single pound of essential oil.

Most of the oils that are produced today are used by the perfume industry. They are purchased for their aromatic qualities only. The oils are produced in completely the wrong way for any health benefits to remain. High pressure and temperature along with chemical solvents are often used during the distillation process to extract a greater quantity of oil at a faster pace. These oils can smell very good and cost much less, but they will lack the most important if not all of the chemical constituents necessary to produce a Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oil.

The oils can come from many different parts of the plant, including seeds, bark, leaves, stems, roots, flowers, and fruit. One of the most important factors when considering essential oils is their purity and therapeutic value. This is determined by the oils chemical components or constituents. The constituents of an essential oil can be affected by a number of variables including the part of the plant from which the oil was taken, fertilizer used, soil condition, climate, altitude, geographical location, harvest season, harvest method and distillation process.

Plants can produce several types of chemotypes (simple species or biochemical specifics) depending on the method and conditions of growth, region, and climate. Thyme for instance can have high levels of thymol depending on the time of year in which it is distilled. If distilled during mid-summer or late fall, there can be higher levels off carvacrol, causing the oil to be more caustic or irritating to the skin. Low temperature and low pressure distillation is also an important factor to maintaining the purity and fragrance of a therapeutic value of oil.

As we use and begin to understand the benefits and power of essential oils in our personal healthcare, we begin to comprehend the absolute necessity for procuring certified pure therapeutic grade (CPTG) essential oils. There can be no substitute for the purest essential oils we can find. Scientist and chemists have been able to reproduce in labs some of the constituents in essential oils but have yet to recreate an essential oil completely.

All information on this website is based on the use of certified pure therapeutic grade (CPTG) essential oils. Those of you who are new in the discovery of essential oils, or even those who are versed in the use and terminology of essential oils and aromatherapy must actively seek out the highest therapeutic grade and purest quality essential oils available. Anything less then certified pure therapeutic grade (CPTG) essential oils may not produce the desired effects and results and in some cases can be extremely toxic.

What does it mean to be classified as Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade?

For an essential oil company to be classified as therapeutic grade, there is only 1 test to pass- the Gas Chromatograph (Gas) test.

What does the Gas Chromatograph test look for?

Each essential oil has hundreds of compounds. During the gas test ,specific compounds are checked for. As long as the specific compounds are present, the oil passes and can be classified as therapeutic grade. An important factor to note here is that there is no requirement for purity in this test. This test does not check for foreign impurities such as pesticides and weeds, nor does it check for all of the compounds to be present. If the specific compounds that the test was searching for are all created synthetically, the oil will still pass. Here’s the kicker- if an oil passes and is allowed to be classified as therapeutic grade, it can also be labeled as 100% pure, even if it’s contents are entirely synthetic or harmful.

We have to do better than that right? Then let’s talk about a second test that most high end essential oil companies perform.

The Mass Spectrometry(MS) Test

The MS test looks for key things that the gas chromatograph test did not look for. 1) It checks for foreign impurities of any kind. 2) Tests for exact amounts of compounds, all of them must be present in order to pass. If there is 1 out of hundreds of compounds missing it does not pass. 3) All compounds must be pure.

What are the problems with this test? There is no regulation on how often this test should be performed. Most companies don’t perform the MS test often, some go years between testing. Some companies perform this test in house, a cause for concern since this leaves room for a conflict of interest. Prices for oils are higher than those from companies who only perform the GAS test, and yet you may be getting the same quality of oil.

What is Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG)?

CPTG means that both the gas chromatograph and mass spectrometry test were performed, but beyond that it also guarantees that the MS test was performed for every oil! This standard means that you know your oil is 100% pure! The therapeutic properties will perform at their best and you can use these oils for therapy without worrying about harmful side effects. Because they are so pure and potent, very little is used for an application. Most applications require no more than 1-3 drops per use.

doTERRA’s CPTG essential oils can be used in conjunction with any current medication you are taking, and will not interfere with any health regime you might be following. In fact, CPTG oils by doTERRA will do a better job than the medication can and can only enhance a healthy lifestyle. A bold statement? Yes, medications help combat health issues, but at what cost. There is always a list of pretty nasty side effects that come with the use of any synthetic medication. Whether they be symptoms that show after a few uses or symptoms that will take years to surface, negative action inside the body has a negative impact on the body.

It is what we know as “the flu.” This also applies to different strains of “the flu” including the swine flu, or H1N1. Common symptoms of the flu include high fever, cough, sore throat, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, nausea and congestion.

There are numerous oils that can be beneficial in both preventing the onset of the flu and aid in fighting off the infection.

The most common are:

Breathe (One of the best selling doTerra oils in winter for this reason alone)

On Guard (The best selling oil)

Eucalyptus

Melaleuca

Peppermint

Rosemary

There are others to consider also, but these 6 essential oils above should be your first choice. The additional oils include:

Lavender

Oregano

White Fir (for aches and pains)

Thyme

Wild Orange

Clove

Ginger (for nausea)

Application of the oils:

Diffusing the oils into the air can give both the benefits of healing to those suffering from the flu and help prevent the spread of the virus, especially if the oil being used has anti-viral properties.

Dilute any of the oils as recommended and apply to the chest, back, thymus area, or sinuses.

Add 1-2 drops to a hot bath.

This is an article written by Dr. David Hill from doTERRA regarding methods for keeping yourself clear of infectious diseases. Enjoy!

Unfortunately, germs and our exposure to them are a regular occurrence. As resistance and new strains continue to develop, we are at an increasing risk for serious infection.
I realize that there are many discussion threads regarding the potential dangers concerning the swine flu and other infectious health risks. There is much in the way of scientific medical research which demonstrates the efficacy of essential oils against a variety of pathogenic germs. Naturally occurring compound groups such as alcohols, phenols and aldehydes are often identified as being the most beneficial. I feel confident that it is a reasonable and responsible approach to use essential oils daily in a model of prevention and for resolution of symptoms in the cases of exposure.

In general, reducing our exposure and enhancing immune protection is our best defense. I suggest using dōTERRA essential oils in the following way:

1. Establish the daily routine of applying On Guard on the bottom of feet (for yourself as well as family members) both morning and night, which creates long-lasting and consistent protection.

2. Diffuse dōTERRA essential oils in your home routinely throughout the day. On Guard and your favorite citrus oil combined is a potent and uplifting aroma.

3. Drink plenty of water. Adding a few drops of your favorite citrus oil will enhance your body’s natural defenses.

4. Viruses and bacteria are found in staggering numbers on surfaces. Use essential oils to thoroughly clean and disinfect all surfaces you and your family come in contact with. A mixture of Wild Orange, On Guard, and Thyme is especially potent. Diluting the mixture with water in a small glass spray bottle can easily be used anywhere, anytime. Simply spray and wipe for germ-free surfaces on the go.

5. Wash and wipe your hands using essential oils. Adding essential oils to your favorite soap increases effectiveness.

6. Use essential oils in combination to enhance their germ fighting benefits. The essential oils of On Guard (dōTERRA’s natural defense blend), Oregano, and Thyme are a critical part of your family’s protection plan. At the onset of any infection this combination used internally by capsule ingestion or on the bottom of the feet can offer quick relief and elimination.

7. Maintain the basis of personal health through appropriate supplementation. Using dōTERRA Lifelong Wellness pack has immune sustaining benefits for your entire family. With an ORAC score of nearly 6000 per serving, every cell in your body is fortified.

Using CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade™ essential oils is a safe and consistent approach to safeguarding individual and family health.

Yours in Health,

Topically – By applying the do Terra essential oils either undiluted or diluted onto the skin, you will receive a quick and effective benefit from the oils. They can be used in a massage, hot or cold compress, shower or bath.

Aromatically – Commonly referred to as Aromatherapy. Diffusing essential oils into the air aids in disinfecting the surrounding area, including both air and surfaces. Diffusing the oils can help combat fungus, bacteria, mold and air-borne microbes. Aromatherapy has it many health benefits also, you will be receiving the essential oil health benefits by breathing them in.

Internally – By ingesting the essential oils, you will receive the health benefits as the oils are taken into your system. Be sure to check the label of your essential oils. Many essential oils are made with fillers, chemicals and additives and are not safe to ingest. doTerra essential oils are 100% pure and safe to ingest. Wintergreen is the only oil doTerra offers that you shouldn’t ingest.

When it comes to summer, it’s natural to be outside enjoying the warmer weather. Camping, picnics, hiking or just a day at the park are favorite past times. Some of the most common items that are brought along, range from water bottles, footballs, tents and insect repellent. Many times we don’t think twice about some of the things we bring along or the negative health effects. Almost all insect repellent that you can purchase contain DEET. As a society, we have come to accept DEET as a must have in keeping little flying annoyances from our bodies.

DEET was invented in 1946 for jungle warfare by the US Military and later made available to civilians in 1956 as a pesticide for farm fields. That alone tells us a bit about what we are spraying on our bodies. There have been negative side effects with the use of DEET, like many products out there. I for one have decided to keep DEET off of myself and my family members. Other interesting points that have kept me away from using DEET are;

It is highly recommended to wash off the DEET after you are back indoors.

It is highly recommended to thoroughly wash any clothes that were treated before wearing them again.

It is discouraged to put on children less than 2 years old, especially infants.

The EPA has categorized DEET as Category III toxicity, which means DEET is “slightly toxic”.

According to EPA, DEET products are intended for spare, infrequent use.

Plus others ranging from newer regulations for DEET labels with additional precaution and child safety rules.

Studies have shown that there are very effective natural insect repellents derived from certain plants, or in other words, essential oils. Eucalyptus and lemongrass are mentioned quite often as good alternatives for insect repellent. Besides the obvious benefits, using essential oils is healthy and can strengthen the body and immune system.

doTERRA offers a essential oil blend, TerraShield, prepared especially as an insect repellent. TerraShields’ proprietary blend mixes 15 Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade™ essential oils that have been shown scientifically to repel insects more effectively than the leading synthetic products. Applying just a small amount of TerraShield essential oil blend will provide a powerful insect barrier for up to six hours per application.

When talking about essential oils and using a 2% or 5% dilution mixture, what does it all mean. It is easy, if you have the right resources and information at your disposal. I will show you common ways people dilute their essential oils and how simple and easy it can be.

When we talk about dilution, we are referring to adding the essential oils to some type of carrier oil, whether it is olive oil, safflower oil or doTERRA’s Fractionated Coconut Oil. This dilutes the essential oil for it useable purpose. When speaking of dilution of essential oils, it is usually referred to as either a percentage or amount of oil to be added to the carrier oil. Below are common ways to figure out how much pure essential oil needs to be added to a carrier oil. After time, it will become second nature when calculating out the amounts of oils for the mixture.

Carrier Oil Amount

1%

2%

5%

10%

1 Teaspoon

1 drop

2 drops

5 drops

10 drops

1 Tablespoon

3 drops

6 drops

15 drops

30 drops

1 Fluid Ounce

6 drops

12 drops

30 drops

60 drops

Hopefully you will be able to take this information and apply it to your essential oil knowledge. There are some oils, mixtures or remedies which work best with a required dilution or percentage of essential oil. Good luck and stay healthy.

When considering essential oils, being able to identify the quality and potency of essential oils is very important. Part one described different aspects of essential oils to be aware of when making purchases. Essential oils are regulated by fragrance laws are are not considered a nutrient or supplement, but are given a grade type depending on the oils purity and percent composition. Let’s discuss the different grades of oil quality and what you can expect from each.

Grade C – Perfume grade. This is the type of oils you will find, for the most part, in perfumes and scented products. The main concern for producers of Grade C essential oils is quantity. Perfume quality oils use many solvents and chemicals to increase the yield of the oils. The chemicals and solvents used are typically cancerous. Many health food stores and hypothocaries may carry “pure” or “organic” essential oils that are of Grade C type.

Grade B – Food grade. Like many of our food products these days, Grade B essential oils still contain fillers, synthetics and carrier oils. These additives and chemicals are obviously not good for the body. Both grade C and B oils can have anywhere from 5 to 99 percent pure essential oil in their contents.

Grade A – Therapeutic Grade. This type is of a better quality and needs to go through a specific distillation process to achieve this grade. You should feel very safe using therapeutic grade essential oils. These oils are considered truly organic and pure.

Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade – CPTG goes above and beyond Grade A. The quality far exceeds the AFNOR or ISO standards. Multiple tests are performed, including mass spectrometry and gas chromatography. The oils are certified 100% pure and natural. At present, there is only one manufacturer with this standard of essential oil quality and that is dōTerra, a fairly young pure essential oil company.

The scent of each grade varies tremendously. Grade A and Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade oils keep there essence and their scent doesn’t change over time. When it comes to quality and purity, the grade you choose could be the difference between using carcinogens or receiving excellent healing benefits.
